Restylane is a safe, natural, dermal filler derived from non-animal-based hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is present in our bodies in a natural form and does the function of providing volume and fullness to the skin.
Restylane has been in use across the world since 1996 and in 2003, it was approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). As it is a completely biocompatible substance, it need not be tested for allergic reactions. After the treatment, some patients report a mild redness or swelling in the area which will disappear in 5 to 7 days.
Before 2003, collagen fillers derived from the skin of cows and pigs (that were specially bred for this purpose) were used. Zyderm and Zyplast were two such fillers. Allergy testing was done on the patient for 4 weeks before starting the program. Both the fillers had an effect lasting 2 to 4 months, after which the fillers had to be reapplied.
In 2003, the FDA approved human, bioengineered, collagen fillers known as Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast which did not require any allergy testing. Here again, the results last 2 to 4 months after which the fillers have to be reapplied.
